Rhone Alps
The Rhône-Alpes region is located on the eastern border of France, towards the south, bordering both Italy and Switzerland. The region was named after the Rhône River and the Alps mountain range, both of which dominate and define its spectacular countryside. The region however, is not only famed for it’s natural wonders. Its capital, Lyon, is in fact the second-largest metropolitan area in France - after Paris of course – and widely reputed to be the country’s capital of gastronomy.
Winter in the region goes by in a blur, as you would expect with the quality and sheer expanse of the region’s ski-slopes. The summer however has a completely different feel, where visitors can enjoy wonderful long walks and even take a dip in the mountain lakes! There are several national parks including the Parc National De La Vanoise, with its high mountains, steep valleys and glaciers, which accommodate those who love to explore with 500km of trails.
The region, and specifically its départements Savoie and Haute-Savoie, is home to some of the most famous of French scenery. The mountains start to rise at Lake Geneva and climb all the way to the tip of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe.
