In the north of the region, you will find Poitiers, a historical city with stunning architecture, including famous sites like the 14th century St John’s cathedral and the Roman baths. This style can be found surrounding the city with attractive villages like Chauvigny and Parthenay and the larger Niort, which contain many authentic stone-fronted and timbered medieval houses.
Southeast of Poitiers, on the coast, are the two main beach resorts of La Rochelle and Royan, famous for their safe and sandy beaches. La Rochelle is reputed to be the most attractive and original seaside town in France, given its stunning location and 17th century town centre.
Just off the coast, near the resort of Royan, you will find a number of gorgeous, easily accessible islands, which during the summer are recognized as some of the sunniest places in France. One such island is called the Ile de Re, characterised by the stark contrast of salt marshes and oysters on one side and sandy beaches on the other.
Other sites of interest include the town of Cognac, where visitors can and do sample the world famous brandy first-hand!
