Location
The region of Languedoc-Roussillon is characterised by its vast versatility. The region is easily accessible, comparatively cheap, has historical and captivating cities, an interesting hinterland and a wealth of breathtaking natural areas. It is bathed in sunshine for much of the year, the temperatures are agreeable and the sea with its broad, sweeping beaches is suitable for children and the rest of the family. In this area you can combine a range of holidays with trips to the rough nature areas or visits to the inspiring cities. The splendid coast of the Languedoc-Roussillon stretches for 240 km. along the Mediterranean Sea and around 40 bays and ports in the region hoist the blue flag daily, the European indicator for clean swimming water. The sun-impregnated coast stretches westwards and then southwards until Argelès-sur-Mer. Beyond that, near the Spanish border, the rocky capes of the Côte Vermeille arise from the sea. The coastal villages radiate their distinctive character, still instilled with the past. Great painters, such as Matisse and Picasso, were inspired here, as you can be! The hinterland has an untouched, savage beauty with a wealth of caves, nature parks, plateaus and deep river valleys that are a playground for wonderful walks or bike rides. If you prefer, on the Canal du Midi you can gently explore almost 240 km of navigable water ways. This part of France is also well known for its ancient heritage, the colourful (and noisy!) festivals, open-air theatres and grape harvest festivals, which allow a wide spectrum of tastes to be catered for.
