One of the oldest of the Riviera resorts, Cannes owes much of its popularity to a superb setting below the Esterel mountain range and to its exceptionally mild climate. These were the factors which attracted Lord Brougham to spend the winter there during the mid-19th century, and the English aristocracy who followed his example assisted the little fishing village to begin its development into today's modern complex. The essence of the new Cannes may be found around the Boulevard de la Croisette, the seafront promenade bordered by renowned palace hotels and dotted with gardens and palm trees. Such events as the glamorous International Film Festival, which takes place each May, ensure the resort's continued prosperity.
Travelling to Nice International Airport is just a distance away where there are direct flights to most major European cities in less than 2 hrs. There are numerous direct flights from many destinations in the UK (BA, Air France, and Easy Jet) & Ireland (Air Lingus). We understand that a new TGV line will be built from Marseille to Nice, dramatically reducing current time spent travelling.
Location
When the brilliant blue of the Mediterranean is seen from the high corniches that follow the coast between Antibes and Menton, it is easy to understand why this stretch of coast, perhaps more than that to the west, is thought of as the heart of the Côte d'Azur. This is a busy, densely populated coastline, a vibrant and colourful area that invigorates all the senses.
